Brendan Teer takes men’s title as Joanne Mills retains ladies top prize:

On Tuesday 3rd September 2013 nearly one hundred and forty athletes turned out for the traditional Mill Hill Mile road race in Castlewellan. The annual event, which see’s competitors start in Annsborough and run one mile uphill to the Market House in Castlewellan, has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence in recent years, quite possibly due to the impressive amount of Junior athletes now getting involved. Thanks to all who donated towards the Shimna Valley Cancer Care for Children Charity. A total of £578.71 was raised on the night and Newcastle AC donated a further £500 to bring the total to £1078.71.

Brendan Teer (East Down AC) took nearly one minute off his time from last year to seal a notable victory, the East Down AC man, who finished as runner up in Sunday’s Laganside 10k, crossed the line in 5:26 to huge applause from the gathered crowds.

Newcastle’s Deon McNeilly holds the course record, which stands at 5:00 and year on year it seems this record is going to stand the test of time.

Young Lagan Valley AC man, Ryan Cialis Sharkey followed in 5:44 (2nd place), before Nigel McKibbin (Dromore AC) claimed third place.

Arguably Newcastle’s Jack O’Hare had the best run of the local runners (he’s now vying for the best runner pound for pound in Newcastle AC) where he took many “quicker” runners’s scalps with an impressive 6.50 – Well done Jack!

In the ladies race, Joanne Mills (University of Birmingham AC) retained her title from last year, bettering her winning time from last year (7:03) to win in 6:44. Newry AC’s Lauren Hutchinson showed some of the track speed that has secured her place as one of the best up and coming talents, claiming 2nd place in 7:12; Lauren Gardner (East Down AC) crossed the line just four seconds later, taking 3rd place in 7:16.

The junior runners had some fantastic performances with standout performances by 4th place Under 16 Oisin O’Callaghan in 5.58 and in 23rd place Under 12 Tim Prenter in 7.00.
Congratulation’s to all who took part.
