On Thursday evening, the track and field Newcastle AC junior squad headed for South Belfast again for the Lagan Valley AC Fab 5 event. This was meet number three of five in the series and the club had already celebrated great success in the previous meets. However, as the sun yet again shone down upon Mary Peters Track, the Juniors brought their A game and were ready to make themselves the competitors to beat.

All roads led to Slieve Binnian on Thursday night for the infamous Binnian To The Top, Hill and Dale Race. Race 4 of the series saw over 300 runners take to the start line at Carrick Little. The only Full Open Mountain race for the U16 squad and welcoming back a full U18 contingent after their trip to Limerick to secure themselves a place in the U20 Irish Team.

This week, the idyllic and peaceful surroundings of the rolling hills of Tollymore and Castlewellan were soon forgotten as the hardcore put on their mudclaws and prepared to take on the first open mountain race of the 2023 Hill & Dale Series where the mist engulfed the peaks on high.

On Thursday, focus returned to the second race of the Hill and Dale series in our own backyard of Tollymore Forest Park. It doesn’t matter how many times you run around Tollymore, there is always a hill that you have chosen to forget existed until you are half way up it and cursing your great idea to follow this route.

The second instalment of the Fab 5 series was yet again blessed by beautiful clear blue skies and a dramatic drop in temperature as the sun went to bed and our young athletes powered on at Mary Peters Track on, late into Thursday evening.
