World Youth Skyrunning Championships, Italy

Ethan McMullan and Patrick McDaid  represented Ireland in the Youth C category at the World Youth Skyrunning Championships held in Fonte Cerreto, Gran Sasso, Italy at the weekend as part of Team Skyrunning Ireland.
Both athletes proudly featured in the Vertical Kilometer on Friday, a demanding 1000m climb over roughly 3.8km and the 23k Skyrace with over 2220m elevation gain on Sunday,  in one of Europe’s most iconic mountain venues
Ethan proudly claimed the 1st Irish Man across the line in both races with Patrick close on his heels on both occasions.
An incredible achievement on the world stage.

Martin McMullan Completes Lakeland 100

Well done to Martin McMullan who completed the Lakeland 100 in the last weekend of July. The Lakeland 100 actually covers 105 miles (because 100 wasn’t enough!) and 22,493 feet of elevation.

Described as the most spectacular long distance trail race which has ever taken place within the UK. The circular route encompasses the whole of the lakeland fells almost entirely of public bridleways and footpaths. The route starts in Coniston and heads South before completing a clockwise loop which takes in the Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale and Buttermere before arriving in Keswick. From here the route heads to Matterdale and continues over to Haweswater before returning via Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater to the finish at Coniston. The event is continuous in nature, competitors don’t have to stop or sleep on the route. Continue reading

The road from Newcastle to Rostrevor led members through the charming Reid Hall, nestled halfway between Hilltown and Rostrevor — the very landscape that inspired C.S. Lewis to write The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Not quite Narnia, but close enough for a 5K race.
