Against the Heat and the Field: Connaire Óg Delivers National Bronze

The curtain came down on the National Juvenile Track and Field Championships on Sunday with the staging of the B Championships, bringing this year’s national track and field campaign to a close. Representing the club on the final day was Connaire Óg McVeigh, who once again showed the determination, commitment and competitive spirit required to perform on the national stage despite the challenging conditions created by the intense summer heat.

A fantastic run from Connaire Óg- striking when it mattered most

With temperatures soaring throughout the day, athletes faced demanding circumstances, with organisers making adjustments to the schedule to help manage the effects of the extreme heat. Despite the difficult conditions, Connaire Óg approached his race with great focus and composure, ready to take on the challenge of competing against some of the best young athletes in the country.

The standout performance of the day came in the Boys’ 800m Final, where Connaire Óg produced a superb run to claim the bronze medal. Following a delay to the start of the race due to the intense heat, he remained calm and prepared as he waited for the opportunity to compete.

From the sound of the gun, Connaire Óg ran with confidence and determination, staying firmly in contention throughout the race. Showing great strength and maturity, he battled through the demanding conditions before producing a strong finish to secure third place in a new personal best time of 2:15.32. The performance earned him a well-deserved national bronze medal and marked another significant milestone in his athletic journey.

As athletes continue their development through Summer Sessions, local races, parkruns and regular training, the foundations are already being laid for another exciting season. The dedication shown by athletes, coaches, families and supporters throughout the year will stand them in good stead as preparations continue for the Ulster Cross Country Championships in October, where the club will aim to build on this year’s achievements and continue its progress across all terrains.
