Newcastle Athletes Shine at National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone

A lifetime best in Athlone for Aoife in U16 1500m walk

The National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone this year showcased some of Ireland’s brightest young athletic talent and Newcastle Athletic Club was proudly represented by two rising stars – Aoife Grant and Paddy Sherrard– in the highly competitive 1500m racewalk events.

Aoife Grant delivered a strong performance, finishing 5th, a significant improvement on her 12th-place finish at schools last year and taking a further 16 seconds off her personal best. Aoife has already demonstrated her versatility, with standout performances at the Ulster Athletics Spring Throws in Letterkenny just last week, showing her capability across multiple disciplines. Her multi-event profile is rapidly gaining recognition in athletics circles and her performance in Athlone confirmed that she is continuing to develop as a well-rounded and formidable competitor. Throughout the race, Aoife maintained excellent technique and composure, keeping pace with the leading walkers and demonstrating her tactical awareness in the closing stages, finishing the race with zero fouls to her number. Although more suited to the endurance walk events, she was still able to embrace the demands of a sprint race and take the spot of 2nd Ulster girl across the line and challenging other U16 and U17 competitors right to the line.

Paddy Sherrard also impressed in the early stages. Paddy will move up to the intermediate level at schools, where he will compete in the 2000m racewalk. Paddy has enjoyed success within the 3000m racewalk which is a distance that truly tests his endurance and racewalking skills. In Athlone, Paddy showed determination and focus, maintaining consistent form however carrying a minor niggle in his knee, made the practical demands of locking that right knee more challenging and evident to the officials. With just under 2 laps to go, Paddy knew the right decision was to pull out of the race and not risk further damage this early in the season. A mature choice from this young man.

The Championships themselves provided a lively and competitive environment, bringing together young athletes from across Ireland. The 1500m racewalk, in particular, tested both technical skill and physical stamina, and both Aoife and Paddy rose to the challenge. Their performances highlight not only individual talent but also the effectiveness of Newcastle Athletic Club’s coaching and youth development programme, which continues to nurture athletes capable of excelling nationally across all three disciplines.

With the outdoor season on the horizon and school competitions approaching, these results in Athlone serve as a confidence booster and a stepping stone for both athletes. Coaches and supporters alike are looking forward to seeing Aoife and Paddy continue to develop, compete, and achieve further success at higher levels of Irish athletics. Their dedication, progress and versatility make them athletes to watch in the coming months and beyond.
