Down Schools XC Championship 2018

Newcastle AC athletes had expected the worst, but instead were greeted with sunshine for most of the event and little or no wind.
The conditions were heavy underfoot, with the odd shoe being lost in the mud.

Some fantastic results from our runners, with two particularly impressive PB’s from Ciara Savage in Yr 9 and Lora Stevens in Yr 10, both managing to qualify for Ulster in the process!

Mini Girls and Boys (Year 8)

The two Anna’s crossed the line together, Anna Colhoun and Anna O’Flaherty, in their first XC Secondary School Championship in 85th and 86th (out of 135)
In the boys race Cathoir King had a fantastic run to finish 38th (out of 146)

Minor (Year 9)

Last year Ciara Savage managed a very commendable 24th, but this year she up staged that result with 12th and qualification for the Ulster Championships in the process. Rosie Torney was next with a fantastic result in 27th and Emily Steele followed in 44th.
Running a slightly longer race, the boys were next with Tom Crudgington taking 49th, followed by Finlay Easton and Chris Barbour in 85th and 86th (out of 134).

Junior

The biggest PB of the day was in this race, with a stunning 15th by Lora Stevens- she was 67th last year! Followed by a strong run by Alea Brannigan in 33rd – incidently a PB too, from 44th last year. (70 runners in this race)
The top result of the day was from Ronan McVeigh. The only Newcastle AC Athlete in this race, he managed 9th (out of 109). He qualifies for Ulster in 10 days.

Inter

This GCSE age group ran a mathmatical race, 21st, 31st and 41st for Newcastle AC athletes! Eve Kenneally came 21st, followed by Holly Jennings in 31st and then Kiara Cairns in 41st.

Well done to all our athletes who took part and for the final McGrady XC in Tollymore on Sunday 25th.

Good luck to our three athletes heading to the Ulster Championships in Mallusk on Wed 21st – Ronan McVeigh, Ciara Savage and Lora Stevens.

Please let us know if we have missed anyone in the results above.
