Bailey and Wilson make it double tops on Sl Donard

Report by Bogman

I’m not a betting man but would guess that the odds of winning the Sl Donard race two years in a row would be fairly generous. To do that and record the same time as last year (57.01) and also retain the fastest descent trophy would surely have attracted very generous odds. So step forward Ian Bailey, the man who did all the above to become the winner of the 70th Sl Donard race. The “red/yellow magpie” who just returned to racing in the last few weeks led his club Newcastle AC to the team award, along with team mates David o Flaherty (2nd) and Colm Murtagh (8th). Bailey is the Big Boy
by Bogman
At the 69th running of the Slieve Donard race on Saturday, Newcastle AC runner Ian Bailey won the event for his first time. He now has become the 34th winner of this event and in doing so has joined the who’s who of fell running. Bailey who has been catching the eye at the Hill and Dale series, put together a near prefect run in what turned out to be very testing conditions.
Even before the race started, conditions at race HQ at the Newcastle Centre were showing an early indication of what was to come, on the journey up to the 849mt summit, the highest point in Northern Ireland. Continue reading

by Bogman

YOUTH HAS ITS DAY
19-year-old Andrew Annett became the youngest winner of the Slieve Donard race when he trotted through the Frank Morgan memorial finishing gantry in a time of 55.37.  In doing so he denied Deon Mc Neilly his elusive 10th win in the race but with years on his side Andrew could become the first person to make it to 10 wins. Slieve Donard Race 2012

In addition to the excellent coverage that will be provided in the local press, the 67th Slieve Donard race is more than likely to be featured in the Irish Daily Mirror tomorrow.  Maurice Fitzmaurice took part in the race and has forwarded material for publication to the Sports Editor.  The prophet Jerome’s injury could be labelled ‘the hand of God!’ or Damien’s rarer than hen’s teeth appearance could be making the headlines in the national press!  Watch that space tomorrow!!!
