• Registration will open at 12:30pm. Please arrive early as there are over 100 athletes to register.

There is a Christmas Craft Fair in Castleward over the weekend, including Sunday, so it will be very busy and the National Trust are expecting a lot of traffic. We have been asked to use the Farmyard car park, which is at the far end of the Estate, where we went 2 years ago for the first race there, it’s the enclosed courtyard beside the clock tower. Because of this and the delays with traffic leave plenty of time to get there.
No cars except for event organisers will be allowed up to the House as last year. We will marshal cars as best we can but it will be necessary for drivers to tell staff on Pay Office (over the hill past course on the left) that they are there for the cross country races to avoid paying a fee.
See you all on Sunday.

This year the finals where held in the superb facilities of the Cork Institute of  Technology in the city of Cork. The 4 strong girls team that travelled to Cork was made up of Kate McCauley, Eve Kennelly, Hannah Carson and Amy McCrickard. Good luck to our U10 Girls, Eve Kenneally, Amy McCrickard, Hannah Carson and Kate McCauley who are off to Cork this weekend to compete in the Athletics Ireland U9-U11 Track and Field Championships. This will be a great experience for these talented young athletes.

17th June 2012

After the great results from the younger Newcastle AC athletes last weekend, it was the turn of the older members to display their talents at the NI and Ulster U14 – U17 Track & Field Championships. This event was held at the Antrim Forum over the weekend.

The club was represented by 4 athletes and after a lot of hard work and effort put in at training all 4 really impressed and showed again what phenomenal talent these young teenagers have and prove that the future of athletics in this area is in safe hands.

Congratulations to Patrick Sheridan who brought home 2 medals from Championships. On Saturday morning Patrick set a new personal best (PB) in the U16B 800m heats of 2:14.05 which put him through to the final. On Saturday afternoon he won bronze in the final and also set another PB with an incredible time of 2:10.08. Patrick was back at the Antrim forum again on Sunday this time competing in the U17B 3000m race. He collected a silver medal in this race with another fantastic time of 9:59.29. The fact that Patrick only turned 15 in February but competed in the U17 event makes this result even more remarkable

Also on Saturday Jack Quinn was in action in the U15B 200m event.  Jack ran a fantastic race to finish 4th in his heat in a great time of 29.76, only just missing out on a place in the final.

On Sunday it was the turn of the girls. Dearbhla Magee finished 9th in a very competitive U16G 1500m race and put in a fantastic effort in a time of 5:23.03. Dara Herron was competing in the U16 G long jump. Dara had a best jump of 4.05 metres to finish in 8th place.

The 4 young athletes should be very proud of their achievements, and we know that a lot more medals are destined to follow these young athletes.

Patrick has now qualified for the All Ireland Championships in both events which will take place in Tullamore, Co. Offaly in July. Newcastle AC would like to wish Patrick all the very best at the Championships

18th December 2011

Sixty five brave juniors from Newcastle AC and East Down AC turned up to race in Donard Park yesterday. It was bitterly cold but there were valuable points to be gained in Race 4 of the McGrady Financial Services Junior Cross Country Series and the young athletes battled on.

With snow falling and blizzard like conditions Newcastle AC volunteers and Joe Quinn from East Down AC started to set up the registration tent and mark out the course. As the snow stopped the athletes and parents started to arrive. The registration tent was a buzz of activity and was no easy task in the howling wind and mud. Thanks to the registration team who did a fantastic job and got all athletes registered by 11am. Running slightly behind the scheduled time Brian Steele led everyone around the course for a warm up lap.

The P4 and Under were then quickly called to the start line and set off up through the park. For the first time in the Series there was a downhill finish which brought a lot of happy smiles when it was announced. Led by Rory Corrigan the field of 11 soon reached the downhill finish. As in many a Hill and Dale race they were coming in thick and fast. Not a problem for experienced time keeper Frank Morgan but coach Watson and trainee coach Jamie Brannigan ran into difficulties recording all the numbers. Ronan McVeigh finished in 2nd place just one second behind Rory and in third place was Joe Black. First girl was Newcastle’s Emily Steele and 2nd girl was Kitty McKinney.

Four girls and five boys set off in the P5 race. Victorious yet again, Conor Murray crossed the line first, followed by Andrew Watson and Andrew McGrattan. It was a very close finish in the girls race Eve Kenneally taking first followed by Natasha Savage in 2nd and Kate Maginnis in 3rd.

There were 3 boys and 3 girls in the P6 race so everyone who finished was guaranteed a medal. But the colour of medal had to be fought for. In the boys race gold went to East Down AC’s Caoilin Quinn, silver to Josh Faulkner and bronze to Aidan McCauley. In the girls race Gold went again to East Down with Caoimhe Grace O’Donnell returning to the Series. Silver was won by Kiara Cairns and bronze by Eabha Campbell.

As fingers and toes started to freeze it was decided to make the remaining races slightly shorter. The P7’s were called to the start line and quickly set off. Tim Prenter finished again in 1st place but Caolan Hawkins narrowed the gap to only 4 secs to finish in second with Matthew McGRattan in third. A clear winner of the girls race was Sarah Dougherty with Michaela Quinn in second and Marie Claire McVeigh added another bronze medal to her collection.

No girls and only 1 Newcastle boy started in the Yr 8 race. East Down AC girls therefore had a clean sweep with Aoife Cochrane in first, Laura Green in second and Jemma Black in third. Matthew Carrick was a clear winner of the boys race with a 34 second gap to Daniel Atkinson in second place and Jack Lenny in third.

The course was a lot more slippery now as the Year 9’s lined up. The boys had no time for tactics like in Race 3. With a short race ahead they sped around with Jack Quinn finishing in first place closely followed by Daniel Molloy and Dillon Morgan. In her first race of the Series, Ellen Erskine won the girls race and beat many of the boys. In second place was Laura Gardiner and third Eilis Doyle.

The last race of the day quickly got under way once eight Year 10+ athletes lined up. Way ahead as usual was Patrick Sheridan with Patrick Erkine finishing in 2nd and Ewan Findlay in third. With no East Down AC girls entered Newcastle had a clean sweep with Anna Rogan, Ellen Erskine and Aisling Pell.

With as many warm clothes as possible on, everyone gathered around the tent for the presentation. In the absence of the Series sponsor, PJ McCrickard, Edna McNeilly stepped in and presented the winners with their medals. Competitiors and parents then rushed home to thaw out. However the committed volunteers remained to dismantle the tent and course with numb fingers and toes. Well done to Jamie Brannigan who has now volunteered over 50 hours as part of the GoldMark Volunteer Scheme.

The next race of the Series will be in Castleward on 15th January.

Congratulations to Eoghan Totten who had a fantastic race at the World Junior Mountain Running Championships in Albania. Eoghan was part of the Irish team.

Temperatures on the course just south of Tirana Albania were in the mid 30s, much of the course was run through a building site covered in toxic cement dust, and there was a steep dangerous descent at the top of the course.

Eoghan and Killian O’Connor started well in the top 20 but the heat and the course took their toll. Adem Karagoz (TUR) won in a time of 37:01. Eoghan held on well for 24th in a time of 41:07 which is the highest Irish performance in this category in many years. The other three junior Irish runners finished together in the low 40s. Turkey won the team race with Ireland 11th.

Last night was the 5th and final Super 5 Track and Field meet organised by Lagan Valley AC. Nine junior athletes and one senior athlete travelled to the Mary Peters track to compete in the various events. We again came home with medals and some great performances. The first event was the Mini 150m. The sun was shining as our athletes ran their heats. Gabriel Corrigan finished his heat in 2nd place and got an overall place of 7th in a time of 24.85. Caolan Hawkins had a good win in his heat but came 9th overall in a time of 25.55. Ruairi and Fionn Carey, running for the first time on the track, finished in 11th place in 26.11 and 22nd place in 30.0 respectively. Representing the girls in the Mini 150m were Chliodhna Carey and Rioghnagh McGuigan. Chliodhna finished in 17th place in 27.28. Unfortunately no result was recorded for Rioghnach but as always she gave it everything and always finishes with a smile. Next on the track was Neil McAllister, our only senior club representative. Our first medal of the night came when Neil finished in 1st place in the senior 200m race in a time of 26.01. This impressed our junior athletes who were shouting lots of encouragement throughout his race.

After the sprint events was the Mini 600m boys event. Gabriel Corrigan led the field out for the first 200m. Unfortunately Gabriel could not hold onto this position but finished in a impressive 4th place in a time 2.07.07. Just behind him in 5th place was Caolan Hawkins with his usual strong sprint finish recording a time of 2.09.32. In a field of 28 athletes Ruairi Carey also finished strongly in 16th place with a time of 2.20.45. Chliodna Carey and Rioghnach McGuigan lined up with 18 others for the Mini girls 600m race. Chliodhna finished in 16th place in a time of 2.29.97 and Rioghnagh finished in 18th place in a time 2.44.17.

One of the last track events of the night was the U15 boys 800m race. It had now started to rain and was getting dark but our juniors remained on the sidelines to shout for and support Patrick Sheridan who lined up with 9 others. Patrick recorded a new PB, finishing in 5th place in a time of 2.25.3.

While the track events were taking place there was also lots of exciting performances taking place in the field events. Gabriel, Caolan, Ruairi and Fionn competed in the Mini Shot Putt event . The second medal of the night came when Caolan won bronze with a throw of 5.28m. He just missed out on silver by 1cm. Ruairi finished in 4th place with a throw of 4.76m, Gabriel in 8th place with a throw of 3.88m and Fionn in 12th place with a throw of 2.73m. Chliodhna finished in 4th place with a throw of 4.52 and Rioghnagh finished in 9th place with a throw of 3.60m in a big field of 17 athletes in the Mini girls Shot Putt.

Meanwhile Ross McCrickard was competing in the U13 Boys Long Jump where he finished in 6th place with a jump of 3.28m. Ross also competed in the Discus event and was joined by Aidan Hawkins. This was Aidans first activity since fracturing his patella back in April. Aidan finished 4th in the discus with a throw of 14.23m just behind Gareth Crawford from Strabane Track Club who threw 14.69m. Ross finished in 5th place with a throw of 13.58m. These were fantastic throws from both these boys who have had no coaching in discus throwing yet. Aidan then moved to the U13 boys Javelin event where he was again up against Gareth Crawford and Dylan Kearns from Killybegs AC. Determined not to let his knee hinder his performance Aidan produced great throws to take bronze with a throw of 19.79m.

Well done to all our young juniors who took part in this Series. We look forward to next year and hope a lot more can make it to the track to represent their club.
